Foot Injuries While Fishing Are Possible

Those passionate about fishing love the fresh air, exercise, and excitement it brings. However, there are dangers involved in fishing, including injuries to the ankles and feet. The most common fishing injuries that can impact the lower extremities are falls, sprains, and breaks. Those who fish from a boat can sustain injuries, such as spraining an ankle or breaking a foot, from getting in and out of the boat. Rocks, mud, and getting 'sea legs' from sitting on the boat too long can all contribute to entrance and exit spills. Tips for preventing these types of falls include wearing hard-soled shoes with closed toes and using the sides, tubes, or gunnels of the boat to properly balance while getting on and off the boat. One should not try to jump from the boat because the force of jumping can push the boat away, causing a loss of balance. If you fish for sport or fun and have sustained an injury to your feet or ankles, a podiatrist can help diagnose the problem and provide treatment.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with one our our podiatrists from Newtown Comprehensive Foot Care. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Babies, Adults, and Flat Feet

Flat feet is a condition that babies are born with. The arch typically develops during the teenage years in the majority of people, yet fails to do so in some adults. It is easy to tell if you have flat feet. Simply stand with your feet flat on the floor. People who do not have an arch will notice their entire foot rolls inward, and some patients may feel pain from it. If a considerable amount of walking is done, the foot may ache, and custom-made orthotics may be an option for pain relief. Flat feet often happen for genetic reasons, and may occur, although rarely, from improper foot growth in the womb. People who have gained weight may find that they have become flat footed from the additional weight the feet must endure. In severe cases, surgery may be required to build or restore the arch. If you have flat feet, please speak with a podiatrist who can accurately determine the extent of this condition, and offer treatment options, if needed, that are correct for you.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one our our podiatrists from Newtown Comprehensive Foot Care. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Veins and Spider Veins in the Feet

The feet are complex parts of the human body that are made up of a series of different bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Importantly, the feet also contain veins, which are blood vessels that return old blood to the heart. Sometimes, a condition known as spider veins may develop in the feet. Spider veins essentially develop when many different small veins gather together beneath the skin. As a result, the veins can be visible on the surface of the skin, and they might be red, blue, or purple in color. Luckily, spider veins are mostly harmless to those that develop them. In addition to the feet, spider veins can also develop on the lower legs . If you are someone that wants to learn more about the veins of the feet and particularly how spider veins develop, contact a podiatrist today.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

Ways to Pamper Your Feet

Most people forget how hard the feet work for them and do not give them the attention or care that they deserve. Usually, it takes a problem with the feet to get one’s attention. Tired and achy feet can benefit from reflexology, stretching, and pedicures, all of which should feel relaxing and soothing. Reflexology involves applying pressure with the hands to specific points on the feet with the goal of improving functioning of certain organs and glands. Gentle stretching of the feet can alleviate tension and strengthen muscles in the soles of the feet. In addition to making your toenails look pretty, pedicures can provide comfort in the form of massage, hot water soaks, and exfoliation. It is important to take care of the feet to get the most out of them. If you would like more suggestions for how you can properly care for your feet, see a podiatrist today.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

High heels are a popular type of shoe to wear, despite the foot conditions that may develop. Blisters are a common ailment that many women get, and they can occur on the back of the heels, or the sides of the feet. This can happen if the shoe doesn’t fit correctly, and women may use methods such as putting cotton balls in the shoes, or bandages where blisters would develop. Wearing high heels that do not have enough room in the toe area may cause Morton’s neuroma to develop. This is defined as irritation and thickening of the nerve that lies between the third and fourth toes. It can cause severe pain and discomfort, and the pain may be temporarily alleviated when lower-heeled shoes are worn. Additionally, these types of shoes can put stress on the joints and bones, possibly leading to getting a stress fracture. Any type of foot pain that comes from wearing high heels is treated by a podiatrist, and it is suggested that you consult with this type of doctor who can offer relief tactics, and recommend shoes that are better for your feet.

High heels have a history of causing foot and ankle problems. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact one our our podiatrists from Newtown Comprehensive Foot Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Effects of High Heels on the Feet

High heels are popular shoes among women because of their many styles and societal appeal.  Despite this, high heels can still cause many health problems if worn too frequently.

Which Parts of My Body Will Be Affected by High Heels?

  • Ankle Joints
  • Achilles Tendon – May shorten and stiffen with prolonged wear
  • Balls of the Feet
  • Knees – Heels cause the knees to bend constantly, creating stress on them
  • Back – They decrease the spine’s ability to absorb shock, which may lead to back pain.  The vertebrae of the lower back may compress.

What Kinds of Foot Problems Can Develop from Wearing High Heels?

  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Plantar Fasciitis

How Can I Still Wear High Heels and Maintain Foot Health?

If you want to wear high heeled shoes, make sure that you are not wearing them every day, as this will help prevent long term physical problems.  Try wearing thicker heels as opposed to stilettos to distribute weight more evenly across the feet.  Always make sure you are wearing the proper shoes for the right occasion, such as sneakers for exercising.  If you walk to work, try carrying your heels with you and changing into them once you arrive at work.  Adding inserts to your heels can help cushion your feet and absorb shock. Full foot inserts or metatarsal pads are available.
